Alien Invasion- Topography Print Trend

By Sadey Saputo

ORIGINATE- The Topography Print Trend In Menswear For Fall 2016

I was inspired by the show at the New York Public Library, Public Eye: 175 Years of Sharing Photography. The exhibition showcased the evolution of photography and how we see it today.

As I looked upon the images from the past, I became more aware of the perspective from which they were photographed. The more obvious ones were aerial views. This got me thinking about life and how people are stuck looking at the world in black and white and from our earthly perspective.

From afar, the photographs looked like a flat piece of art consisting of curves and simple shapes. As I moved closer, I was surprised to see how my mind was rejecting the reality that it was a “landscape.” The average person, myself included, understands landscape as a horizontal image composed of mountains, trees, fields, etc.

We have been taught to think this way and have mindlessly accepted that what we are taught is the right way. I beg to differ. I believe we should question the “norm” and be creative and open-minded in our way of thinking and start finding the “grey areas” in life.

Aerial View – Color/Pattern

This got me thinking about my own personal experience with aerial views. Coming from a rural area, the geometries of farmland instantly came to mind, in addition to the “alien invasion” circles, locally known as center pivots. More specifically, the many flights where I luckily obtained a window seat with a view lead to research of what was going on in the trend forecasting industry.

The Topography Print Trend

Valentino Fall 2015 Menswear Collection

Designer: Valentino Fall 2015

Looking through the menswear collections, Valentino’s stood out the most. I feel he captured the essence of the graphic geometrics in his prints and garment construction. I also liked how it was a more advanced utilitarian look, a sweater paired with blue jeans and black patent leather shoes. This combination of textiles and materials really rounded out this trend concept for me.

Print Inspiration: Center Pivots

For my all-over print, I designed a pattern using an actual aerial view of farmland with the circles from the center pivots. I thought it would be interesting to take the photograph and color-reduce it. This graphic could be used, just like the prints in the Valentino collection, on a knit top or a sweater.
